De Groene Luwte

Self-catering De Deel is part of De Groene Luwte, our village-farm and 2-acre landscaped garden. ‘De Groene Luwte’ literally means: a lush and secluded place, eco in character.

Our home is a classic late 19th-century Groningen village-farm, which has been fully refurbished over the years. We installed an eco-isolated roof and solar panels, supplying all the electricity we need. Rainwater is saved and stored wherever we can. Wooded areas in the garden provide fuel for our wood-burning stoves. Special care has been taken to keep house and garden as free as possible of EMF-radiation.

The garden includes a biodynamic orchard and vegetable garden, several permaculture beds and two unheated greenhouses. We try to live as green and self-supporting as possible; keeping chickens, geese and bees helps a lot… Over the years many aspiring organic gardeners – or those who wish to lead a greener life – found inspiration here and holiday-guests still do!

Surroundings

Surroundings

Surroundings

Holiday apartment De Deel is an ideal starting point for either hiking and cycling or for kayaking and canoe trips, as it is centrally located on the unique Hogeland of Groningen – a true dorado for silence seekers, cyclists and nature lovers, as well as for birdwatchers, photographers, writers and painters.
The Hogeland is part of the seemingly endless Wadden Sea landscape (a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the oldest cultured landscapes in Europe) and borders the Lauwersmeer National Park which, with all its lakes, woods and wetlands is a true bird’s paradise.
South of the Hogeland is a region called Middag-Humsterland (National Landscape), with the lovely Reitdiepdal (river valley) and highly attractive villages, like Niehove.

To the east BlauweStad (‘Blue Town’) and the area around Loppersum are worth your visit. Within 25 minutes by car you can either reach the ferry to the Wadden island of Schiermonnikoogwith its dunes, wide beaches and quaint village, or choose just the opposite: the historic town-centre of busy, beautiful Groningen (City) and its boasting museums, markets, pubs, concert halls and shops to please all shopaholics.

Within cycling distance are many picturesque villages with centuries-old churches (and their world famous organs!) museums, galleries, gardens, country houses, nurseries and cosy restaurants. Popular family attractions in the vicinity are: Zoutkamp harbour, Lauwersoog’s Seal Nursery and Waddenfun in Leens, Holland’s biggest indoor climbing gym.

Tips

* Cycle from De Deel to Lauwersoog Harbour (about 16 miles) and take the ferry to the island of Schiermonnikoog
* Cycle along the Wadden dikes, for wide views of land and (tidal) waters. To the northwest, out in the Wadden Sea, you’ll spot Schiermonnikoog´s lighthouse and water tower and to the northeast the first of the German Wadden Isles, Borkum.
* Take a walk on the salt marshes and mud flats, hear and see nature… and nothing else!
* Walk a few miles along the Pieterpad (Holland´s most famous long distance footpath – its starting point in Pieterburen is only 2 miles km away)
* Rent a canoe or kayak in nearby Wehe Den Hoorn and paddle along, exploring the beautiful inland waterways

Self-catering De Deel

Self-catering De Deel

Self-catering holiday-let De Deel near the Wadden Sea in northern Holland: natural beauty and peaceful, easy living

Holiday-let De Deel is a spacious, independent holiday-home with fully private facilities, for up to three persons.
De Deel is located in the characteristic village farm of De Groene Luwte in Molenrij, a hamlet in the north of Groningen, 1,5 miles from the unique Wadden Sea (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and close to National Park Het Lauwersmeer with its woods, lakes and wetlands.
We love to welcome you to our comfortable holliday apartment. Added bonuses: the sunny terrace and landscaped eco-garden of De Groene Luwte.

Peace and quiet…

Due to the peaceful atmosphere of De Deel and its unique location near the Wadden Sea, this holiday-let is perfect for those who love the wide open spaces of the salt marshes, sand and mudflats and islands and ‘polders’ of the Wadden Sea region.

Another vista? The lakes, woods and wetlands of National Park Het Lauwersmeer are just 16 miles west of us. Which makes De Deel tailor-made for cyclists and nature lovers, bird-watchers, artists, peace seekers and for those who love sailing or canoeing.

In our village small-scale living and tranquility are still very common and will be enjoyed fully in holiday-let De Deel and its organic garden. We turn off the WiFi in our apartment at night so that body and mind can find real peace. (During the day we turn on Wi-Fi only at your request).

Exploring the region

Here in Northern Groningen, with the Wadden Sea only 1,5 miles away, you’ll enjoy the most wonderful views, spectacular cloudscapes and night skies!
For this is an area where water, land and air meet in ever-changing light. The Wadden Sea is the largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud flats in the world, continuing along the German and Danish coasts.

Around holiday-let De Deel and Molenrij – waiting for you to explore by bike, kayak or canoe – you’ll find picturesque century-old villages, lush greenery around farms and winding roads and waterways. Or visit the many medieval churches and small but exquisite museums, or explore architectural beauty (early mediaeval to the ‘Amsterdam School’ of the 1920’s) in nearby larger villages or small towns.

All this… within a 3 hours’ drive from any air- or seaport in Holland. Things to see and do in the vicinity of De Deel…

De Deel, inside and out

This lovely apartment is located in De Groene Luwte , meaning ‘lush and green’ and a green lifestyle. De Groene Luwte consists of our characteristic village farm (1895) and its surrounding  2-acre landscaped eco garden.

As a  house-barn conversion De Deel is generously sized. Once a working farm De Deel was used to stock harvests, hay and straw and to stable horse and cart. The farm’s history is still tangible in the old trusses, beams and stable windows, which lend an extra element to De Deel – its timeless, peaceful atmosphere helps to relax and feel at ease.

Take one step outside and you’re in the eco-garden with its flower borders, tall willows, poplars and maples and… wildlife! Birds of course, but hedgehogs, butterflies and other insects and small mammals live here too. Even roe deer regularly visit our green oasis – taking a nap, nibbling on tall grasses and checking to see if the organic kitchen garden still stocks some of their preferred veggies, like Swiss chard!
De Deels offers even more…
